In pharmaceuticals they are working either as active principle for their calcium content or as excipients in galenic preparations. In cosmetics, they are predominantly used for their thickening effect, low abrasivity, polishing qualities and alkaline pH. In food application they are an appropriate calcium source but also an effective anti-caking or deacidifying agents .
